I
was so excited when I received an invitation to the grand opening
of the new 20th Century Fox Studios opening in Sydney Australia.
I was especially thrilled because my daughter Becca took time
from college and was able to go on the trip with me. She
had always wanted to go to Australia, as had I. ... And it was
a trip worth waiting for.
My
former co-star Nicholas Hammond (who played Frederich in The
Sound of Music) and I, were asked to talk about this movie
and how it came into the hands of Darryl F. Zanuck; who was the
head of Fox Studios at that time. It was great visiting
Nicholas who has lived in Sydney for ten years. I don't get to
see him as often as I like to. The night was fantastic,
and our segment went well.
Then
we introduced Shirley Jones who spoke of Carousel in
which she starred. She sang with host Hugh Jackman and they
both sounded great. There were hundreds of dancers, big
production numbers with fireworks and Australian singers and actresses
like Nicole Kidman and Cate Blanchett. We all had a blast.
Perhaps you saw the broadcast, it was shown around the world and
I was honoured to be a part of it.
I
was gone for two wonderful weeks, participating in the studio
event as well as the opening night of The Sound of Music
(stage) play at the Lyric Theatre in Sydney. That was
fun and I got to meet all the kids in the show. It’s a wonderful
production and as always it brought back terrific memories of
the movie. ...Which sometimes feels like I just filmed it yesterday.
We
took in as much sightseeing, exploring and theatre as we could.
Sydney Harbour is the most beautiful harbour I have ever seen
and we were blessed with fabulous weather. ...You Aussies are
warm and hospitable, and I can't wait to go back.

Hi
Everyone,
The month of June was filled with celebration, as my son Jesse,
graduated to High School (I can't believe it), and my daughter
Becca, still in
College, moved into her own apartment - something else I find
hard to believe.
I appeared at 'DragonCon' (a Sci-fi convention) in Atlanta, Georgia,
June 30th, July I st & 2nd, 2000. Bill Mumy was there with
me. It was great, we got to look around Atlanta a little bit and
we appeared on Atlanta's Peachtree Morning Show. On November 19th,
I was flown to New York City with Kym Karath where we attended
the Sing-a-long-Sound of Music at the Waverly Theatre. You get
to see the movie on the big screen with the words to the songs
printed on the film, so you and the audience can sing and cheer
along with the movie. It was a ton of fun.
On November 25th and 26th, Bill and I travelled to Columbus, Ohio,
where we were joined by June Lockhart for the 'Mid-Ohio-Convention
Thanksgiving Weekend', at the Hilton Columbus at Easton Town Center.
But on October 30th 2000, a 35-year-old dream came true for me!
..Myself and all the 'family' cast of The Sound of Music were
invited to spend two incredible weeks in Salzburg, Austria. Starting
in early November, England's Yorkshire Television, collected all
seven of us 'Von Trapp Kids' for a documentary journey down memory
lane. We were gathered together from different parts of the planet;
at O'Hare Airport in Chicago, to fly to Austria to revisit the
locations where we shot the movie.
You can imagine how excited we were, I had dreamed of going back
to these places, but wasn't prepared for the emotional feelings
of being there with my 'movie family' remembering the incredible
experiences all over again. It was like being transported back
in time. We revisited the locations we had the picnic and sang
'Do Re Mi' (which was shot all over Salzburg).
It was as untouched and beautiful as ever.
One of the most poignant moments for me was ...

We
relived moments 35 years ago that brought us to tears and laughter.
I can't believe it's happened... We all had a time that we will
never, ever, forget.
So Long, Farewell
