CONVENTIONS
Winter
Convention
June 11,
2000
Welcome to the Lost in Space Australia
Fan Club Winter 2000 Convention.
Conversing over the net is always fun but sometimes it would be nice
to meet up with the people that you chat with over the air waves.
So it was nice for me to finally meet two fellow Australians at whom
I had met on the Internet. This momentous event occurred
at the recent Lost In Space Australia Convention held on the 11th
June, 2000. Held at the Bankstown Sports Club the Convention
was L.I.S.A's first for the new millennium and the day was marked
by a large crowd of enthusiastic fans who had travelled from
all parts of the country to take part in the event. Australian
Conventions are not like overseas Conventions and the days activities
included the showing of an episode of Lost In Space (My friend Mr
Nobody) as well as special screenings from overseas and other events.
Because
of the distance Australia is from the rest of the world we are starved
for LIS
merchandise and many of the fans come along to Conventions with home
made items featuring their favourite characters. Long time fan
and Club member Julie Rowe displayed another of her famous cross stitches,
this time based on Judy Robinson. While the artwork was finished
the final product has
yet
to be decided upon. Julie has done several cross stitches
based on LIS themes which have become throw pillows and wall hangings.
It is a credit to Julie that a few of her works have been sent overseas
to the LIS stars. Another fan attended wearing a jacket that
he and his wife had decorated with motifs of the Robot and the Jupiter
2.
Before
the official opening fans inspected the three dealers tables and
but the table that
drew the most attention was that owned by LISA member Glenn. Over
the years Glenn has amassed a large collection of LIS merchandise
and today he revealed Guy Williams Season One Laser Rifle. When
he first acquired the Laser Gun it was in need of some serious attention
and had been recently refurbished for it's appearance at the
Convention . Many fans took the opportunity to have their photo
taken with the rifle while standing between the Club's Robot and
Robotoid.
The Rifle was in working order too and during the Panel section of
the day the lights were dimmed so that this could be displayed.
Glenn has some truly amazing pieces of memorabilia and always
manages to come up with a surprise or two.
Trading
was brisk and is an indication of how starved Australian LIS
fans are. Many of the items bought on the day were the last
in stock and so may never been seen again. Re released for the
day was the first three volumes of the Australian Lost in Space Videos
while the other hot release was Volume Three of the Classic Lost in
Space Music. These CD's have not been released in Australia
and as such are very rare. Australian produced T-Shirts
were also available. Merchandise varied from fan produced to Official
items such as Action Figures and J2 Play sets. Also featured
were signed photographs and programs from past LISA International
Conventions. In demand were the Inkworks Classic Lost
In Space card Set although these are becoming very hard to come
by.
The
Special screenings are always a hit and this time round the screenings
covered a wide variety of events. The difference between
home grown Conventions and the overseas variety was highlighted by
footage supplied to the LISA club by American Mike Clarke. This
footage showed an enormous hall filled with tables at which Stars
sat and signed autographs, sold photographs.
and merchandise. This was followed by a presentation on Guy
Williams in an
early Lone Ranger episode. It was a little known fact that both
Guy and Clayton Moore both played the Character Zorro.
Angela Cartwright was the centre presentation of the day and highlights
of her trip down under for then opening of Fox Studios Australia and
the Sound of Music were shown. Just how far LIS is rooted
into our society was evident by a feature that showed comedy send
ups from both Australia and New Zealand based around the show.
It is amazing that after thirty years a show that has
what most consider 'a cult' following still has the ability to be
automatically recognised. The Panel Section of the day
announced the world breaking news that " LIS - The story Continues"
is being discussed and planned out for sometime in the near future.
The news came, via Glenn, from no other personage than LIS -
man Kevin Burns. Kevin has close ties to all of the LIS cast
as well as Sheila Allen and it is still early days but the prognosis
looks good.
It
does not matter how many times you hear it you just don't know what
to expect of a person you have heard a lot about but never met.
During the day I had the opportunity to meet with two fellow fans
who I had met over the internet - Jeanette Kelly and George James.
We met on the one of the many LIS based Chat lines on
the Internet and both Jeanette and George beat me to the punch
by reporting about the Convention on the Internet. Many of the
fans at the Convention have Internet friends and it is always
interesting and fun to meet face to face. Both George
and Jeanette are relatively new to the experience of a LISA Con.
Jeanette is the Australian representative of the Bill Mumy Fan Club
and was introduced to the crowd. George, Jeanette
and I had a great time laughing about a wide range of topics and just
to show what brave souls they are, they joined the LISA Committee
and a few others at the Post Convention Dinner. This a major
event at Conventions and is open to all attendees but it does have
the habit of becoming a bit loud and rowdy.
Says
Jeanette -
"I just wanted to say it was wonderful to meet you today
- it was GREAT to be able to finally match your name with
your face - I'm just finding it so interesting to be making
like-minded friends at LISA who are also on the discussion lists..... Can't
wait till the next Con when I can have dinner with all you Committee
guys/gals again - I had a ball !.....
Just hope Mum can keep up with the finances ! I just blew
all of my birthday gift money today at the Con......."
George
continues -
"Anyway
guys first things first. The L.I.S. A Convention was absolutely
excellent. And the amount of trouble that Glenn,
the Committee, Kevin and his wife Rosalie, and a whole
bunch of other people went to to make it interesting and informative
was amazing. We were treated to film clips and bits of trivia
that only TRUE fans would have gone to the trouble to find for us.
So thanks guys. After the convention I joined the committee members
for dinner where Kevin and Glen had us laughing all night and filled
us in on all sorts of L.I.S. behind the scenes titbits.....
It
was also a pleasure to meet Jeannette.....I look forward to seeing
you and Kevin again at the next convention, which I believe will be
in another 2 or 3 months. Also, having met Kevin for the first
time I wanted to tell everyone, that truly, you just COULDN'T
help liking him.....
Oh
yeah. We saw a film clip of a send up of L.I.S. by an Australian comedy
show. The actor that played Dr. Smith was using robot put-downs."
Throughout
the day there were several raffle draws but the one that caught everyone's
attention was the draw won by young Lauren Yeates. Lauren is
a very young LIS fan and was at the Convention with her father.
Her prize was a Teddy bear that was bigger than her!
A
great day was had by all. Thanks to everyone who attended Committee
& Fans alike for making the day another success. See you soon
at the next LISA Con.
